Pokagon State Park’s Beloved Toboggan Run Is Returning To Indiana
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hoosiers may have fewer options for holiday adventures than they’re used to this year. Fortunately, many of Indiana’s famous wintery adventures are still running right on schedule. Pokagon State Park’s famous and beloved toboggan run is returning this year, just in time to revive your seasonal spirits. When the temperature drops, it's time to drop some altitude. Originally constructed in the 1930s, the Pokagon Toboggan Run has been renovated over the years into a winter adventure that will leave you white-knuckled with excitement.
Today, the toboggan run drops daring traveller's an exhilarating 90 feet. The top recorded speed on the run is currently 42 miles an hour. That might not seem fast for those who drive more than sled, but when it's just you, your toboggan, and the winter wind in your ears, it feels like flying.
Pokagon is a year-round destination for vibrant views and wildlife wanderings. The toboggan run opens in late November, a full month before the start of winter. So you can do your run before the cold gets too ruthless.
While winter adventuring is its own reward, there's nothing better than being able to defrost your bones in comfort at the end of the long day. Pokagon offers plenty of accommodations that should fortify you after a day on the slides, from woodburning fires to its iconic log cabin lodging.
The toboggan run at Pokagon is open until the end of February, so you have lots of time to plan for winter fun. If you don't make it to Pokagon until the winter wanes, then you'll miss this spectacular seasonal experience. Still, Pokagon has so much nature to see in every season (like the boss beaver above) that missing your tobogganing time won't leave you saying, "dam."
