Vincennes, Indiana is officially considered the oldest city or town in the Hoosier state, dating back to before the 1800s. From 1800 until 1813, Vincennes served as the unofficial capital of the Indiana territory. This historic city was a popular trading post in the Midwest and has some of the area's oldest and most historic buildings.

The Vincennes Historic Sites are the oldest structures in the state. The red building found here served as the first unofficial capitol building and is considered the oldest government building still standing in the entire Midwest.
