10 Underrated Places Around Indianapolis That Even Natives Have Never Heard Of
Indianapolis has a lot of popular attractions
— from art museums and gardens to sports centers and the always popular Indianapolis Zoo. There’s always something to do in this bustling city, but if you’re looking to fly under the radar, one of these 10 underrated places around the Circle City might be perfect for you.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. 1. Visit this ice tree straight out of
Sixty years ago, the Veal family built the very first "ice tree" and has been continuing the tradition for Hoosiers to enjoy ever since. This underrated activity can only be viewed when temperatures are below freezing (which makes this winter's weather seem pretty magical!). The ice tree began as just water that froze over bushes and has now grown into a magical, colorful ice castle that you'll love exploring. Find it at 11333 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46259.
2. Feel like a giant at the Museum of Miniature Houses.
If you've always wanted to feel like a giant, then you're in luck. This eclectic and unique museum just north of Indy is full of whimsical, colorful miniature houses and collectibles to explore. Don't confuse this place as a museum for dollhouses. It's truly a museum with a collection of miniatures and the amazing detail you'll find in every display will blow your mind. 3. Make your own brews at Great Fermentations.
Have you ever wanted to make your own beer or wine? Indy has an awesome place you need to check out: Great Fermentations. Not only will you find everything you need here to get started on your first batch of drinks, you'll also be able to get helpful tips and advice from their knowledgable staff. 4. Check out this awesome sci-fi display at Who North America.
Are you a sci-fi or fantasy fan? Then you'll love this little-known Doctor Who themed experience tucked away in Camby (just south of the city). This building may not look like much from the outside, but don't worry — it's bigger on the inside. With an incredible Doctor Who museum to explore, as well as the largest shop around, you'll be amazed by this whimsical experience, from start to finish. 5. Explore breathtaking ruins at Holliday Park.
Most people don't realize that these stunning ruins are hiding in the middle of Holliday Park. This former piece of architecture came from a skyscraper in NYC and now lives among the nature in this ethereal park. Explore them up close at 6363 Spring Mill Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46260.
6. Investigate the unusual at Sideshow Art and Odditorium.
This unusual museum is a curated display of small and odd works of art made by local artists in Indy. You'll also find cat-eye glasses, handmade cards, old medical illustrations, and other strange works of art for sale. 7. Go stargazing at the Holcomb Observatory.
Located on the campus of Butler University, this little-known observatory is an amazing place to view the stars. You can visit during public tour hours or

8. Curl up with a cup of coffee at Indy's only cat cafe.
Did you know Indy is home to its very own cat cafe? This unique cafe has a coffee house up front and cat playroom in the back. You can enjoy your beverage of choice with these fuzzy felines for $3 per half hour and $5 per hour.

This little-known park is way on the south side of Indy and has some of the most stunning natural gardens in the state. Explore the magical sunken gardens or indoor conservatory any time of year. 10. Get a unique experience at Tappers Arcade Bar.
