But there’s one little-known zoo in Indiana that offers a variety of animal encounters, as well as other adventure options.

Washington Park Zoo is a little-known zoo in Michigan City with a fascinating origin story. The zoo began when a retired animal trainer brought his pet brown bear to the Washington Park area, which eventually led to the construction of the zoo that stands there today.

This gorgeous zoo features more than 90 species of exotic animals in natural settings close to their native environments.

Visitors can experience Bengal tigers, tamarins, alligators, grizzly bears, wolves, lemurs, otters, and so much more.

This zoo also has a fun and kid-friendly bird exhibit where visitors can actually feed birds right from their own hand.

There's a red barn exhibit, as well, full of miniature horses, goats, donkeys, pigs, and other barnyard animals.

The adventure continues at the Rotary Castle where kids can explore and learn more about some of their favorite zoo animals.

A thrilling safari train also offers kids a scenic adventure around the park, for an up-close view of some incredible animal exhibits.

You'll also want to explore the amazing observation tower that looms over the zoo and the Indiana Dunes. Climb up 220 steps to discover one of the best views in the entire state.
