What is winter in Indiana like?

Winter in Indiana can be described as “cold and bitter”. Typically, nighttime lows can reach 15 degrees Fahrenheit, which is well below freezing. It snows here, and some years are snowier than others; typically, Indiana sees snowfall totals of anywhere from 14 to 76 inches, depending on where you’re at. The northernmost reaches of the state tend to be the coldest and snowiest; snow has been known to fall as early as September or October, though typically it begins to come down in November. January is the coldest, snowiest month of the year. Hoosiers usually see the last snowfall of the year in April, though very very occasionally, there will be a late-season snowfall that surprises everyone. Folks thinking about a move to Indiana will want to anticipate the extreme temperatures and occasional risk of blizzards and ice storms; trust us – it’s not as miserable as it sounds like it could be! Winter in Indiana is a magical, photogenic time.
