Indiana is no stranger to spooky urban legends. In fact, the Hoosier State is home to plenty of weird places and supposedly haunted locales that are said to creep the daylights out of any unsuspecting person who might encounter them. We’ve got it all: haunted bridges, haunted cemeteries, even old, haunted theatres. There are places that were stops along the Underground Railroad, there are old mansions that once belonged to governors, settlers, and more! But there’s one particular bridge that gets a lot of flak, deserved or not, for just how “haunted” it’s said to be. Nestled along County Road 625 East in Avon is a bridge that’s known by locals as a “screaming” bridge – and its backstory is truly unsettling. Is this haunted bridge in Indiana truly haunted? Guess we’ll see.
The Avon Bridge was built in 1906 and is supposedly marred by dark incidents throughout its history that - allegedly - resulted in its being haunted.
A young worker fell to his death during the building process, and his body was unable to be retrieved. It's said that his coworkers simply decided to stop attempting to recover the body, so they left it in the concrete and continued work as usual.

Now, is the body of a construction worker really in the framework and concrete of this triple-arch railroad trestle?
...probably not; there are no official records that mention anything about this incident. However, some locals adamantly insist that it happened and, to this day, that man's body is still in there, forever preserved by the horror of his demise.
Another story about Avon Bridge is that of a young mother who found herself cornered by an approaching train while crossing the bridge with her baby one day.
With no choice to avoid being hit other than to jump, she did so; she survived the plunge, but the baby she was holding did not. Brutal, right?
Some Hoosiers living near the bridge insist that it's not the ghost of the construction worker who lurks here, it's the ghost of the young, grieving mother looking for her lost little one. Maybe it's both.
There are also no records of this series of events having happened, either; chances are, it's local urban legend, but at certain times of year when the leaves begin to change and the air gets a little chilly, these spooky tales sure are fun to entertain, even if just for a little while.
The Avon screaming bridge is a creepy place, though, for sure.
It's closed to traffic at night nowadays -- maybe for the safety of travelers, or maybe to keep Hoosiers away from the wails and moaning of the deceased?
What do you think? Have you ever braved the old Avon Bridge? This haunted bridge in Indiana is nothing short of a local legend, and honestly, true or not – we’re totally here for it. Need a little more creepy Hoosier State goodness in your life? Take a look at this article!
