These 6 Places In Indiana Are Being Reclaimed By Mother Nature

From high schools to churches to train stations to hotels and spas, the unfortunate truth is businesses do close from time to time. What is even more unfortunate is when no one bothers to tear the building down and let nature have the space back. The true beauty of Mother Nature is that, in time, she has been reclaiming abandoned buildings as space that belongs to her all over Indiana.
1. Butlerville High School was constructed in Butlerville, Indiana. Records suggest the school shut down between 1948 and 1950. Mother Nature has slowly been marking her territory by reclaiming this high school.
2. The City Methodist Church of Gary, Indiana was a huge part of history for the city of Gary. It was constructed in 1925 and abandoned by the last of its congregation by 1975. A second congregation attempted to make use of the church in the 1980’s, as did a few store fronts. It was not long after the 1980’s that the church was abandoned; and parts of the church were burned in 1997 during the Great Gary Arson. What is truly impressive about this abandoned building is how many film makers find the beauty in it being reclaimed by nature. The 3rd Transformers movie, an episode from the TV show “Life After People”, and parts of the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street were all filmed at this church.
3. Mudlavia Springs is the name of a spa and hotel located just a fourth of a mile to the East of a town in Warren County, Indiana called Kramer. This hotel and spa brought in a lot of people over the years until a fire destroyed it in February of 1920. In the 60’s a smaller building was constructed as a place for people to rest called the “Pleasant Valley Lodge”. Unfortunately, this building was also lost to a fire in 1968. As you can see, nature has done a good job reclaiming what the fires left behind.
4. As a result of the Great Gary Arson of 1997, there are a lot of abandoned buildings in the city of Gary, Indiana. The Gary General Services Building is yet another building in Gary being reclaimed by Mother Nature.
5. This is the old Indiana Union Station of Gary, Indiana. You can find the building near Broadway and 4th. It was sometime during the middle of the 1960’s when this train station was abandoned. If you get a close enough look, you can see that not only has nature started reclaiming this building, but it has made its way inside of the building too!
6. This particular farmhouse is located at S County Road 1025 East in Indianapolis. While it is not a special or well-known building or business, Indiana is known for being a state of farmers. Scattered all over the state you can find abandoned farmhouses like this one being reclaimed by nature.
