Yet another Alton, Illinois oddity, this painting is a replica of Native America art that once appeared on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. It depicts a sort of dragon creature that was a symbol used by the Cahokia. It was a warning to travelers on the river that they were approaching land that belonged to these people and that they were willing to fight to keep it theirs. There is a fabulous roadside attraction hiding in a small Illinois town that is a tribute to all things odd and weird and historical. The memorial depicts American culture throughout the decades and was created by a little-known sign artist who liked to put out messages that made people think. Located in a tiny village, this very strange structure was originally built behind a general store and housed an apartment upstairs. Though the store was torn down in the 1980s, the outhouse still stands and is a tourist attraction that not many know about. Find it at 1022 S Pine St., Gays, IL 61928.
