Fall Activities In Illinois

August 26, 2022

Can I take a train ride in Illinois in the fall?

There’s not much better than a leisurely scenic train ride in the fall is there? You can cozy up in a nice sweater, bring along some loved ones, and turn your attention to the gorgeous views around you without someone having to pay attention to driving or worry about tripping on leaves during a hike. There are a few scenic train rides in Illinois that are worth taking in the fall season. You can ride a vintage steam train in early fall with Monticello Railways. The cars are open air so you’ll want to bundle up, but this is arguably one of the best ways to take in fall foliage. Or you can take a haunted train ride with the Fox River Trolley Museum for a spooky seasonal experience.

What are the most haunted places in Illinois I can visit?

There are so many haunted places in Illinois to visit! It is almost dizzying, to be honest, and you can easily fill the fall season with creepy adventures. In fact, the state has an entire haunted town! Cairo, Illinois is a ghost town and it’s said that spirits roam all over it, especially within the walls of the abandoned hospital and the library.  Another place to feel chills creep up your spine is at McPike Mansion, rumored to be haunted by the mansion’s former owner and a servant of the mansion, many folks have had paranormal experiences here, and luckily for you, you can take a tour!

Where are the best places to view fall foliage in Illinois?

If you want to see the best leaves in the Prairie State, we highly recommend taking the Indiana fall foliage road trip that we’ve put together. It will take you to ten different locations all across the state like the aforementioned Morton Arboretum, charming Pere Marquette State park, and the awe-inspiring Garden of the Gods. This trip is a lot of driving so we recommend breaking it up over a few days, but it’s the perfect little vacation or staycation for those lovers of leaves.
