The Pomona Natural Bridge Trail is a short, mostly easy hike with a couple of small, steep sections in the Shawnee National Forest. There’s a special rock formation you’re sure to love.
The trailhead sign is where you’ll begin and end this 0.3-mile loop trail that is just a short drive north of the tiny town of Pomona, Illinois. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete this trail; however, you’ll see why it’s worth visiting.
The lush surroundings of this trail bring cool shade on hot summer days making this trail a wonderful respite from the heat. Oak-hickory and beech trees create a gorgeous hike for all nature lovers.
Along the way, you’ll see limestone rock formations like these walls with lovely contours and interesting patterns, interspersed with little clinging plants, like a work of art.
The trail will take you over the bridge which is an excellent spot for a gorgeous photo opportunity. There are no railings, so watch your step as you cross!
You will also be walking under the bridge - we promise there are no trolls hiding here. The pockmarks and grooves from rain and erosion will cause one to stop and marvel at the things nature can create.
The trail also leads to a small cave under the rock cliffs, which would be a nice spot to relax and simply take in the beauty of this place, perhaps with a little picnic.
The Pomona Natural Bridge Trail is open year-round. Be aware that venomous snakes and poison ivy exist in this area, and take precautions to watch where you place your hands and feet.
