Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day, you can track a small yet important herd of bison that live at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in northeast Illinois, just outside of Chicago.
The footage is provided by EarthCam in coordination with the U.S. Forest Service. The bison are part of a 20-year experiment that aims to restore a portion of the state to its original environment.
In total, there are 18,500 acres of tallgrass prairie to explore at this restored national area yet still only one percent of the land in Illinois, which is known as the Prairie State, is made up of this sort of environment.
Glimpses of Midewim National Tallgrass Prairie will show you what the land in Illinois looked like when explorers and settlers first made their way to the state.
