At 9200 Cermak Road in Broadview, Illinois, you'll find Sawa's Old Warsaw restaurant, a Polish-style smorgasbord and lounge that's instantly recognizable by its iconic neon sign.
Inside, its dining rooms feel like David Lynch's idea of a supper club — complete with chandeliers and a detailed ceiling, red leather booths, and plenty of mood lighting.
In 1973, former pork butcher and WWII veteran Walter Sawa oped the beloved restaurant. In order to immigrate to the United States in 1948, he first had to escape from a prisoner of war camp in Scotland.
The diverse ethnic backgrounds of the people living in and around Broadview in the 1960s and '70s inspired the family to open the restaurant, sharing with the community the favorite dishes of their homeland.
Today, Sawa's continues to impress and delight with its time-tested dishes, served buffet-style. Choose from the soup and salad bar, sides and salads bar, Polish buffet, American buffet, daily specials, main courses, and desserts.
Here, you can find everything from broasted chicken to carved roast beef, blintzes, potato pancakes, pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kidney bean salad, and much more. Of course, there is plenty of sauerkraut.
