11 Struggles Everyone In Chicago Can Relate To
Living in a big city has its ups and downs. One minute you’re looking up at the shiny buildings and marveling at the architecture, and the next you’re stepping in a puddle even though it hasn’t rained. Theses awkward moments are inevitable for those who live here. Check out 11 things Chicagoans often suffer.
1. Being a Bears fan.
It hasn't been the Bears' season for a long time. The team hasn't been to the Super Bowl in years, and it's been even longer since they won the game. Fans remain loyal, though, knowing one day their time will come.
2. Trying to use the sidewalk after it snows.
Chicago is notorious for not clearing its sidewalks after a snowstorm. Plows dominate the roads, but pedestrian walkways are the responsibility of, well, pedestrians. Invest in some good boots.
3. Coming home to find your dibs chair has been moved.
Nothing is more irritating than digging your car out of a plowed-in parking spot just to have it stolen as soon as you drive away. Some people will move other people's chairs, but it is at their own risk. Chicagoans take dibs
4. Switching between heat and A/C in the same day.
One of the most annoying struggles is trying to maintain a comfortable temperature in Chicago. It can go from 30 to 60 degrees within a single day, especially in the spring and fall.
5. Expecting spring and finding snow.
When April finally arrives, we're ready to get out our shorts and dresses... but you go outside, and there's snow everywhere. Better save that new skirt for a sunnier day.
Winter is over and you're enjoying a dry, ice-free drive down the highway when all of a sudden it feels like your car fell in a hole. Well, it did. Potholes make driving somewhat of an obstacle course.
The end of winter also brings the beginning of construction season. Just when you thought the struggles of getting to work were over, orange barrels and closed roads start popping up everywhere.
8. Passing cyclists.
While many Chicago streets have lanes for bikes that make sharing the road easier, there are other places where you have to maneuver around them on a tight street. While they're dodging parked cars and trying to signal, you have to stay alert to avoid hitting anyone.
9. When a huge truck blocks a lane.
This is most annoying in downtown, where delivery trucks often have to park on the street because there is no place else to go. This causes a backup of cars and people desperately trying to get out from behind it.
10. Trying not to eat only pizza and burgers.
Chicago is the land of amazing food, and it's literally found around every corner. It can be very difficult to maintain a diet here. The struggle is real.
11. Summer humidity.
Huzzah for warmer temperatures, but in Chicago, it also comes with muggy weather. Your hair will frizz, your clothes will stick, and you'll feel puffy all over. Use a hair tie, wear lose clothing, and keep water around to stay cool.
