Remember the days of drawing on the sidewalk with chalk? You may have drew a hopscotch board or played tic-tac-toe. If you were a little more creative with your drawings, you may be interested in Illlinois’ premier chalk art festival in the town of Kewanee.
Whether you love to make art or just look at it, this festival will have something for you. Check out these outstanding works of art:
Kewanee is a decently sized town of about 12,500 residents that hosts the annual Prairie Chicken Chalk Art Festival. This year, the event will be held July 13-14, 2018 and include a little something for everyone.
Competitors in the chalk art challenge can compete in youth or adult competitions for varying age groups and skill levels. Registration is available until all spots are taken, so snag your plot soon.
Youth pay $10 for a 45" by 45" space and chalk while amateur adults pay $35 for a 96" by 96" space and professionals pay $50 for 120 inches and premium chalk. The cost also includes a t-shirt. Teams may also compete for an addition cost.
Competitors have from Friday, July 13, 2018 at 8 a.m. until Saturday, July 14 at 3 p.m. to complete their colorful creations, and guests may watch them draw.
At 4 p.m. on the last day, winners will be announced and given their awards. The top prize for the professional competition is $500, and there are trophies for people's choice.
There's much more going on at this chalk festival than colorful creations. There are also colorful cars. Cruise night will be Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. This will be the 21st year for the event.
This car show will feature more than 150 vintage cars and give awards for the best ones.
There will also be an art show on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Amateurs are welcome to submit their pieces for judging.
The fest also includes student window art, a farmer's market, a color fun run, a magic show, a gigantic sand pile, a petting zoo, and many other kid-friendly activities.
The Prairie Chicken Chalk Art Festival is certainly one of the best events of the summer in the Land of Lincoln. If you happen to be anywhere around this northwest town this July, come check it out.
