Everyone In Illinois Remembers These 10 Things In School

I walked into a store last night and was bombarded by a display of #2 yellow pencils. When is the last time you used a yellow #2 pencil? I know I haven’t in years. But they were such a huge part of my time in school. So just in time for Back to School, we here at Only in Your State are looking back at things we remember from our school days:
1. Lisa Frank
What little girl (and bigger girl, let's be honest) didn't have a Lisa Frank something or other? I remember getting a different folder for each class. And the stickers.
2. Trapper Keeper
This was a MUST HAVE for any kid in the 90s. I really need to dust off one of my old ones!
3. "Miss Susie Had a Steamboat"
I somehow still remember all of the words to those games we could play on the playground. Everyone knew how to play these hand clapping games.
4. Heads Up 7 Up
Heads Up 7 Up was the name of that game where you put your head down on your desk and guess which kid pushed your thumb down. It was a fascinating game when I was about eight years old. Looking back on it, I think the teacher just didn't have her lesson plan with her.
5. Jansport Backpacks
Having a Jansport backpack was some sort of status symbol. Of course, I didn't have one until middle school. But we all envied the kids who had them.
6. Cafeteria Tables
The cafeteria: source of anxiety for children everywhere. And this seating arrangement really didn't help. There's nothing like this setup in real life.
7. $100 calculators
I haven't used a physical calculator since the last year of high school. I'm not sure I'd remember how to turn one on. How many of these did I lose during school? I don't even want to think about it.
8. Homemade book covers
The well off kids bought fabric book covers from the store. We would take a paper grocery bag and "personalize" it for class. This kid did a way better job than I ever did.
9. Overhead projectors
Getting called to write on the overhead projector was the jam. The teacher's pet ALWAYS got to write on the overhead projector.
10. Gelly Roll Pens
These were so, so cool. We would save certain colors for special things, like crushes or your BFF.
