8 Annoying Questions You Should Never Ask An Illinoisan
There are many stereotypes about people from Illinois, and it can cause out-of-staters to ask annoying questions. Though we’ve gotten used to hearing these eight phrases over the years, it still grates us a little each time they’re spoken.
Do us a favor and refrain from asking these questions to an Illinoisan. Keep scrolling for more details.
1. Do you root for the Cubs or White Sox?
For many Illinoisans, that answer is neither. Those are the Chicago teams that much of the north roots for, but down in the southern regions, you're likely to find a good deal of St. Louis Cardinals fans.
2. Do you love deep-dish?
Not all Illinoisans love deep-dish pizza. Again, that's a Chicago thing that doesn't apply to all of us (or even all Chicagoans). We're fine with a hand-tossed, thin crust, or Quad City-style pie.
3. Do you live in Chicago?
As soon as you tell someone you're from Illinois, this is the first question you'll get. While Chicago is home to millions of people, it only takes up a small segment of the state.
4. Is that near Chicago?
Out-of-staters get so hung up on that place. Again, Illinois is a large state, much of which has little to do with the city. Another tourist areas locals love to live in and visit is Springfield and the Shawnee National Forest.
5. Do you live on a farm?
Too many people outside the Midwest assume everyone from a rural area lives on a farm. There are plenty of other cities and small towns that are nowhere near fields.
6. Do you know you have an accent?
Actually, the Midwest is known for being accent-less. Though some regions of the state might speak with some weird inflections, most of us are fairly monotone.
7. Were you home schooled?
Most people from Illinois, even those from small towns, go to public school like just about everyone else. Many of our parents go back to work, so it's off to school for youngins.
8. Can we go to Shedd Aquarium?
Insert Navy Pier or any other Chicago attraction your non-Illinois friends and families always ask to visit. It's true these museums and boardwalks are fun, but Illinois has much more to offer.
While these questions draw out things about Illinoisans that aren’t always true, these are
11 stereotypes people from Illinois just need to accept as fact.
