Hiding off of Highway 20 in eastern Idaho is the gem of a town called Ashton. You may have stopped here on the way to Yellowstone for a quick pit stop, but if you take the time you'll actually discover there's a lot more to this place than meets the eye.
Ashton truly embodies what small town Idaho is all about. With a population of just 1,127, the town is extremely tight-knit. For annual events such as the 4th of July Parade or the Mesa Falls Marathon, you can bet that every member of the community comes out and celebrates. It's that type of place.
The town originally sprang to life in 1906 with the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad through town. The purpose of the railroad was to provide easy access to West Yellowstone and people began to settle in the little town that became known as the "Gateway to Yellowstone National Park".
However, you don't have to travel to Yellowstone to get a taste of adventure. You'll find a ton of places to explore that are much closer to town such as Henry's Fork of the Snake River, Fall River, and the Teton and Madison Rivers. Recreation is abundant!
You'll find all sorts of great lodging and camping options around town, but if you want a true taste of local flavor then we definitely recommend spending a few nights at the Rankin Motel. They've provided lodging to visitors for over 90 years with no signs of stopping anytime soon.
Rankin Motel is composed of several cozy little cabins that were built by the owner's grandfather back in the late 1930s. This place is a true piece of Ashton history that you can't pass up. Oh, and the view from the cabins isn't so bad either.
One of the best parts of visiting a small town is discovering the best places to grab a bite to eat. In this case, 511 Main Fountain and Pizzeria is sure to satisfy. Boasting some of the best pizza in eastern Idaho, this is a true local gem of a restaurant.
Ashton is a great example of small town America. Boasting fantastic local eats, plenty of charm, and little-known natural attractions, this town is a unique vacation destination that you'll be glad you took a chance on.
