Hiding just north of Shoshone is a geologic wonder that most people don't even know exist. You'll swear you've been transported to a different planet when you see Black Magic Canyon with your own eyes. Boasting the most beautiful and fantastical rock sculptures, this is something that every Idahoan should see for themselves.
The main reason that Black Canyon Magic continues to go unnoticed is probably its odd location. Hidden in the middle of nowhere, it can be challenging to even find where the canyon is located. You'll have to drive to the trailhead and then hike down to the canyon.
However, you'll be in total awe once you reach the canyon. The unique slot canyon is comprised of the most wonderful rock formations! It really does look otherworldly.
The canyon's unusual appearance is the result of 10,000 years worth of erosion by the Big Wood River. It's hard to believe that nature alone could create such an incredible looking landscape, yet here it is.
If you do decide to visit the canyon, it's imperative that you call Big Wood Canal Company beforehand. Occasionally, the canal company releases irrigation water through the canyon so it's up to the hiker to obtain information about whether or not the canyon will be suited for hiking. In general, the canyon becomes accessible in late July or August.
There are definitely extra hoops to jump through if you wish to explore the canyon, but it's
so worth it. Can you just imagine walking through this wacky canyon? This is definitely a one-of-a-kind hiking experience that you won't find anywhere else.
The canyon is less than a mile long but you could spend hours scrambling around and taking pictures. Visiting Black Magic Canyon does require some planning, but those who are willing to brave it will end up with a memorable hiking experience unlike any other.
Planning on visiting Black Magic Canyon later this summer? Don't forget to call Big Wood Canal Company at 208-886-2331. Also, be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. You'll find the trailhead off of Magic Road just north of the Shoshone Indian Ice Caves. Click
