Idaho is blessedly untouched by corporate modernity, high-rises, and megacities. However, as with all things, time can (and does) leave its mark — sometimes by the unpredictable and destructive forces of nature, and at others, by human hands. If you’ve ever wondered what a side-by-side historical and present day look at Idaho would be like, this series is for you! Courtesy of archives from around the state, here is our glorious Idaho then and now.

1. The Snake River as seen from Suicide Point near Lewiston.

This modern, southern view still captures the gentle hills before Hell's Canyon.

2. Even in black and white, Alturas lake still shimmers with clarity.

Today, you can't beat the gemstone colored waters.

3. The Upper Mesa Falls seem almost lifelike in this painting.

Fortunately, it hasn't changed much!

4. A quiet stretch of the Snake River near the Oregon border.

5. The Twin Falls-Jerome Intercounty Bridge rises above the Snake River canyon.

The I.B. Perrine Bridge as we know and love it today was a much-needed upgrade.

6. Shoshone Falls circa 1920 was a force to be reckoned with.

Today, the falls are lessened due to diversion, but are still breathtaking!

7. Stanley Lake in 1920 looks peaceful and majestic with the mountains rising in the background.

But it almost seems as though time has stood still in this part of Idaho.

8. The Boise River in 1920 wasn't the thriving, urban oasis it is today.

Today, the Boise River is full of life.
