This lake is tucked away, and the route is challenging, but the payoff is magical, mystical, and unforgettable.

To reach this lake, you’ll take the Box Lake Trail. This is a 7.1-mile out-and-back trail that is going to test you both physically and mentally. You can always tackle this trail in a single day, but it is also the perfect backpacking location.

To find the trailhead, take the Lick Creek Road from McCall for approximately 15 miles.
This trail is quite steep and challenging. This first mile is one of the toughest as you will gain up to 800 feet in elevation.

You will continue to climb and once you have completed this trail in its entirety, you will have gained more than 2,200 feet in elevation!
Fortunately, the views along the trail are beautiful and easily distract you from the strenuous exercise.

There are also plenty of shady areas where you can get out of the sun and take a break. Make sure you bring lots of water, snacks, and sun protection so you can enjoy this outdoor adventure to its fullest.
