Located in the Boulder Mountains in Blaine County, Galena Summit can be found along State Highway 75, also known as the Sawtooth Scenic Byway. Cresting at 8,701 feet above sea level, the summit provides epic views of some of Idaho's best scenery.
The summit itself is nearly 80-miles long, stretching all the way from the town of Stanley to Bellevue. Driving to the summit isn't hard at all, as it's paved the entire way with only a few turns and steep sections.
If you'd like to take in the beauty of the summit, a stop at the official Galena Overlook is the perfect road trip destination. Located along the highway on the west side of the summit, the overlook is a popular place to pull over and snap some photos of the awe-inspiring scenery.
On top of the otherworldly views, the area is also rich with history. The road over Galena Summit was originally completed back in 1881 to serve the mines in the area, particularly the ones at Vienna and Sawtooth City. If you look hard enough, you can still see sections of the old road today!
If you can, try to catch a view from the overlook at sunrise or sunset. However, there's no going wrong with the view at any time of day, or any time of year. From the towering peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains to the lush valleys below, this is one view that never disappoints.
