There’s certainly no shortage of heavenly places to spend the overnight here in Idaho. From rustic cabins to swanky hotels, our state truly has it all—no matter what type of experience you’re looking for. However, there’s one experience that every Idahoan should try at least once: sleeping in a fire lookout. Located high above the clouds on a gorgeous mountaintop, this is one of the most spectacular places to sleep in the state. A night spent at this lookout is bound to be a night you never forget, so consider checking this off your bucket list soon.
Treat yourself to the overnight adventure of a lifetime when you plan a trip to Deadwood Lookout near Garden Valley, Idaho. This historic fire lookout is one of the most popular to rent, and for good reason. The views are simply breathtaking!
Perched atop Deadwood Mountain at a whopping elevation of 8,200-feet, those who rent the cabin will be treated to the view of a lifetime. Surrounded by what seems to be endless forest, this is true Idaho wilderness to its core.
The cabin welcomes visitors seasonally from June through October. Although it's completely possible to drive to the cabin, a high clearance vehicle is recommended to do so since the dirt road becomes very steep and narrow.
However, the extra effort made to reach the cabin is totally worth it for the rustic camping experience it provides. The tower only provides a few basic amenities, so guests are expected to bring anything they may need to keep themselves comfortable.
One of the coolest things about this fire lookout is its history. Although Deadwood Mountain has been home to at least two previous lookouts, the current one was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was used as a fire lookout for decades, officially closing in 1972.
Its remote location makes the tower perfect for getting away from civilization for a few days. Here you'll find complete tranquility among sweeping views of the Boise National Forest. And yes, hiking trails and wildlife viewing are abundant!
The Deadwood Cabin is available to rent for $55.56 per night. You can reserve your spot and read up on all of the cabin's amenities by visiting the Forest Service website here. Just remember that since this is a popular cabin, you'll have to reserve far in advance. However, it's totally worth the wait.
