You may recall a recent post highlighting the outbreak of wildfires in Idaho this season. Unfortunately, there’s yet another crisis facing the Gem State. Since the beginning of September, southeast Idaho has experienced nearly 260 earthquakes in what officials are categorizing as an “earthquake swarm.” Here’s more on the issue and what Idaho residents need to know:

According to the The U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake swarm affecting southeastern Idaho isn't far from the 300 mark in count.

Last Sunday alone, officials noted that there had been 37, most of which occurred in the greater Soda Springs area.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported nor have any structures faced damage despite what seems like an endless sequence of quakes.
While this earthquake swarm is certainly cause for uneasiness and concern, experts believe that a larger earthquake is unlikely.

Earthquakes are the result of a slow shift in the earth's crust. When energy from this shift is released, we feel the quakes in very small doses. A series of small quakes is therefore a much better alternative than having a massive amount of energy released all at once. While a bigger earthquake is unlikely, it's not altogether impossible.
