Pack your swimming gear for your trip to some of Hawaii’s best swimming spots, and satisfy that sweet tooth at a few wildly popular ice cream shops. The itinerary takes you all around Maui, covering more than 140 miles and taking you to five absolutely breathtaking swimming holes and three ice cream shops that will keep you coming back for more. When you’re done exploring for the day, indulge in a luxurious night’s sleep at a Best Western hotel in Hawaii. This is one road trip in Hawaii you won’t soon forget!
Ching’s Pond, 13670 Hana Hwy, Haiku, HI 96708, USA
A short stroll will lead you to some of Hawaii’s most beautiful sapphire blue pools, also known as Ching’s Pond, and a local favorite. Look for Mile Marker 16 on the Hana Highway. Then drive about .09 of a mile, and you’ll find two trails to the Hawaii swimming hole. The easier one starts by a massive tree (you can’t miss it). Soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal clear waters. A few words of warning: avoid swimming if it’s been raining a lot in recent days as flash flooding is common when it rains. Because the water depth changes in the pools, diving is extremely dangerous.

Our next stop takes us to one of Mother Nature’s marvels – a waterfall swimming hole. The two-tiered waterfall drops into a beautiful swimming hole, earning it a nod as one of the most iconic spots in Hawaii. That said, the gorgeous swimming hole can get really busy. If you want to avoid the crowds, go earlier in the day. Please note: you will have to pay an admission fee to Haleakala National Park to access the swimming hole. As with Ching’s Pond, the swimming hole is susceptible to flash flooding, so steer clear after heavy rains.

Only one thing rivals an epic swimming hole, and that’s a scrumptious ice cream treat. We’re heading to Coconut Glen’s for a goody on our next stop. If you love fresh coconuts, consider this a stop in heaven. The shop scoops up vegan ice cream that’s been named the best in the world, but you really have to try this coconut-based ice cream for yourself. Flavors vary but may include lilikoi, vanilla bean, or pineapple banana.

Slip on a pair of comfy shoes for our next stop, which includes a gorgeous .04-mile hike that leads to a breathtaking waterfall swimming hole. Because it’s hidden and not as well-known as other Hawaii swimming holes, you shouldn’t run into many people. Just be prepared to cross a high bridge and for some muddy terrain along the trail that takes you to this secluded spot.

Makena Beach is perhaps best known for its bodysurfing and boogie boarding. Snorkeling is also popular. However, you can also venture into the water to cool off, after sunbathing on the sandy beach. If you do go swimming, just keep an eye out for large waves, which can make it dangerous. Hiking is also popular at Makena Beach State Park and a pleasant way to explore more of Hawaii’s natural beauty.
