The crater was created during an eruption 300,000 years ago. It erupted in a single blast, sending ash and fine particulars into the air.
The site has been turned into the Diamond Head State Monument.

The area encompasses military history, 360-degree views, and its historic hiking trail. The trail, Diamond Head Summit Trail, is an easy hike.
The hike leads you to the top of the rim.

The .8-mile hike is fairly steep, gaining all of its elevation in that short distance.

But it’s easy to navigate and the trail is well marked. It is absolutely worth the effort and most hikers complete it in just under an hour.
There is a $5 fee for non-Hawaiian residents who visit Diamond Head State Monument.

The trail is open daily from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., and children under the age of three are free. Be sure to bring sun protection, as there is no cover for part of the hike.
