This material was made when ash and fine particles in the air cemented together after the eruption. The trail is paved to start, before switchbacks, stairs, and then a tunnel. It’s a fun and interesting climb to the top.
The .8-mile hike is fairly steep, gaining all of its elevation in that short distance.

But it’s easy to navigate and the trail is well marked. It is absolutely worth the effort and most hikers complete it in just under an hour.
There is a $5 fee for non-Hawaiian residents who visit Diamond Head State Monument.
