If there’s one beverage Hawaii is known for, it’s coffee. After all, Hawaii is the only American state with land able to grow coffee. And while we love all of the incredible coffee farms you’ll find across the Hawaiian Islands – there is one variety that has become world-famous. Only grown in a small section of fertile volcanic soil on Hawaii Island’s Kona coast, Kona coffee is definitely a cut above any coffee you can find, well, pretty much anywhere – and nowhere will you find a better cup of authentic Kona coffee than at the famous Greenwell Farms.
Established in 1850 and situated in the heart of Kona coffee country, there is little better coffee than that produced at Greenwell.
In 1873, Greenwell was awarded a "Recognition Diploma" by the President of the Kaiser’s Exposition for their stellar coffee at the World’s Fair in Vienna, Austria - and Greenwell’s coffee has become more famous since then.
Located on approximately 100 acres of the area’s most fertile soil, Greenwell Farms has been family-owned through its history, and is in its fourth generation of management.
In addition to their own crop, Greenwell purchases just-harvested coffee cherry from more than 300 Kona coffee farmers in the region, and operate their own pulping, drying, and storage facilities.
Anyone can stop by the farm to take a personal walking tour through the coffee fields, and the processing facilities, while experiencing all that goes into the operation of a working Hawaiian farm.
On the tour, visitors can learn about each stage of production of Kona coffee on this historic farm, and enjoy free samples of various coffee products.
The farm also offers a variety of coffee samples, and a retail shop where you can stock up on you favorite coffees – like 100 percent Kona Chameleon coffee, which blends the best of Dark Roast, Full City Roast, and their Medium Roast 100 percent Kona coffees.
Greenwell Farms is a must-visit for any coffee lover who lives on - or visits - the Big Island. Nowhere will you learn more about one of the most famous coffee varieties in the world.
