Anyone looking to spend a weekend in Americus should do so around the Halloween season, as the history and haunts are what make this town extra spooky.

For starters, you’ll want to book a room at the Best Western Windsor Hotel in Americus to stay overnight especially if you love a good ghost story.

As the legend goes, a housekeeper and her daughter were murdered by a vengeful lover back in the 1900s by being pushed down an elevator shaft.

Over the years there have been many different ghost sightings of the mother and her daughter who seemingly still reside within the hotel, coming out at night when everyone is asleep.

Tours are held by the hotel on certain dates in October in order to learn all about the hotel’s haunted history from those who have experienced it firsthand.

The Rylander Theater in Americus is said to be haunted as well, by “Frank the Friendly Ghost” the resident ghost who floats the historic halls of the 1920s theater.

Also, while in Sumter County, make a plan to visit the Andersonville National Historic Site.

Guests can take a guided walking tour the highlights the 200-year history of hauntings within the cemetery.

In addition, visitors can head to the Plains’ “haunted house” which is known throughout town as tales of the supernatural have plagued this house for years.
