Once Abandoned And Left To Decay, The Rockwell House In Georgia Has Been Restored To Its Former Glory

To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
There’s something hauntingly beautiful about abandoned places in Georgia. It can feel so tragic to see a once-resplendent building reduced to a boarded-up eyesore. It’s no wonder that places are sometimes left to decay and be taken over by nature – the process of restoring a building is incredibly costly. Between the cost of renovations and the legal hoops to jump through, it’s often deemed not worth the time or money. So when a building is given a second chance at life, it’s a truly noteworthy opportunity. One recently restored abandoned building in Georgia has had just that: the beautiful Rockwell House in Milledgeville.
The magnificent home was built around 1838, back when Milledgeville was still Georgia's capital. Numerous families lived here over the years, including the family of Georgia's 41st governor, Herschel Johnson.
Like many antebellum homes, over the years, the Rockwell House went through cycles of neglect and restoration. In 1969, it was bought to be restored but was heavily damaged during a fire that started during the restoration process.
By the 21st century, the home had been vacant for some time and was again in a state of disrepair. In 2019, it was purchased by a group of investors from Georgia who hoped to see it restored to its former glory.
It’s so great to see this beautiful piece of architecture and history brought back to life! For more information about the Rockwell House, including how to book a stay at this gorgeous property, you can check out the Rockwell House website or Facebook page.
