You may sometimes hear this beautiful place referred to as Colonial Cemetery, though it was officially designated as a city park back in 1896. We may find it strange today to think of a cemetery as a place where you'd enjoy a picnic or stroll through the headstones. However, back in Victorian times, this was actually quite common. It's no surprise that some of the most beautiful cemeteries in Georgia are from this era.
This six-acre cemetery has quite a storied history. It was established in 1750, when Savannah was the colonial capital.

Around 9,000 people were buried there in the century that followed. The cemetery was closed to burials in 1853.
Numerous famous names are buried here. It is the final resting place for war heroes from the American Revolution, members of Georgia's Provincial Congress, and Button Gwinnett, one of three Georgia-born signers of the Declaration of Independence.

During the Civil War, Union troops occupied Savannah. The soldiers invaded the city on Christmas Eve in 1864, during Sherman's famous March to the Sea.

Colonial Park Cemetery became the base camp for several hundred Union soldiers.
By and large, Savannah was spared by Union troops that were passing through. However, Colonial Park Cemetery was one of the small handful of places in the city that was damaged by soldiers.

Soldiers defaced gravestones, snapping headstones in half. Allegedly, they even moved bodies in order to sleep inside of vaults.
Even if you aren't a particularly strong believer in the supernatural, it's easy to see how such vandalism could result in angering of the spirits that dwell here.

Rumors fly regarding the cemetery, which is considered to be one of the most haunted cemeteries in Georgia. Tourists and locals alike report hearing strange noises coming from within the cemetery walls. Sightings of ghostly orbs and a mysterious mist floating over the graves are not uncommon.
Walking through this beautiful cemetery in Savannah, Georgia is awe-inspiring. The Spanish moss that lines the tree limbs, the notorious history of this place, and the sheer number of graves here all combine to give it a sort of spooky beauty that you won't find in many places.
