Here Are The 10 Dishes You Have To Eat In Georgia Before You Die
You can’t talk about what makes Georgia amazing without mentioning the killer cuisine. Georgia is home to some of the best dishes in the country. We’re talking about delicious soul food and delectable Southern fare. Some people visit the state strictly with restaurants and these dishes in mind. Georgia cuisine is like no other, and the dishes that best represent the state deserve some severe recognition. Drum roll, please. Here they are, in no particular order:
1. Biscuits & Gravy
Although nobody really knows who invented the combination of biscuits and gravy, it's noted that the South absolutely was the first to invent the hand-made biscuit. So when you mix that buttery, flaky biscuit with some thick, hot gravy, you get the ultimate Georgia dish.
2. Fried Okra
People of Georgia love their fried okra. The nutty flavor of the vegetable is only amplified when it's dunked in cornmeal and fried in a skillet. Georgians also prepare the dish another way; by deep frying it after a bath of buttermilk, egg and flour.
Grits. A Georgia dish that is synonymous with breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can have grits in Georgia prepared any way you'd like, with butter and salt, with melted cheese, or even a Georgia specialty—with shrimp.
4. Fried Chicken
Fried chicken is a Southern staple, especially when prepared right. The crispness of the skin, mixed with the succulent, juicy meat on the inside, make this dish wildly popular in Georgia. (Make sure you dive right in and eat it with your hands.)
5. Pecan Pie
Georgia produces a heck-of-a-lot of pecans each and every year. In fact, the state is one of the top producers of this delicious nut. That's why if ever you're in Georgia, one of the top dessert dishes is a scrumptious pecan pie.
The thing about Georgia cornbread is that there is a versatility that no other state can match. Whether you're frying these breads up, or baking them in a cast iron to a perfect sweetness, you'll always bet that they'll be on the table at a Georgia dinner party.
7. Brunswick Stew
There may be arguments over where this popular stew originated, but regardless of origin, this stew is a Georgia must-have. This Southern autumn classic warms up those chilly nights, and brings folks together like no other stew.
8. Fried Green Tomatoes
Yes, it's true. The film Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed right here in Georgia. Why? Because Georgians make the best fried green tomatoes! This Southern dish combines the flakiness of a deep fry with the sweetness of the green tomatoes. Pair with a delicious sauce, and you have the perfect Georgian dish.
9. Peach Cobbler
You can't mention the must-have dishes in the Peach State, without mentioning peach cobbler. Nowhere else can you get this sweet, syrupy, warm dish and have it taste just as fresh than in Georgia.
It's a known fact, Georgians do BBQ right. They smoke the meat to a tender perfection, and then slather on the most succulent, sweet sauce. If you're ever in Georgia, and you're not a vegetarian, then BBQ is a must-do dish.
So there you have it—the dishes that you must-have in Georgia. Although this list is making my mouth water, there still may be some that we missed. Feel free to share! We always love a good pot-luck. 🙂
