While some foods can be traced to a particular chef or city, the history of the hamburger is a little murky – there are many stories about the purported birthplace or inventor of this famous sandwich. Seymour, Wisconsin is one of the places that proclaim to be the birthplace of the burger, and if you visit their Burger Fest, you might just bite for their story. The festival celebrates the burger, and the town’s story, in a very big way, serving up a super-sized sandwich, colorful hot air balloons, and an appearance of the legend himself, "Hamburger Charlie."
Here’s why you need to grab your ketchup bottle and head to Seymour’s Burger Fest.
In 1885, a boy named Charlie Nagreen sold a meatball between two slices of bread at the Seymour Fair. This, locals claim, was the very first hamburger. “Hamburger Charlie” will be making an appearance at the fest.
Seymour set the world record for the largest hamburger at a previous Burger Fest and every year the festival cooks up a giant patty. This year’s sandwich will be a monster, weighing in at 200 pounds.
Hot air balloons will take to the night sky above Seymour at Burger fest. The rally promises to be a big spectacle.
Depending on your perspective (and your outfit), this could be a great or a terrible idea: the fest has a “Ketchup Slide” that’s open for attendees.
The fest includes a hamburger eating contest. How many burgers could you put down in one setting? Head to Burger Fest to find out!
The festival also features live music, the world’s largest hamburger parade, a fun run, a car show, and a bounce house for kids.
Seymour is located in Northeast Wisconsin, an easy drive from Appleton and Green Bay. The 2021 Burger Fest takes place on August 14 (the balloon rally takes place Aug. 13-14). Interested in more quirky Wisconsin attractions? Here are 12 spots that will make you do a double-take.
