When it comes to farm-to-table dining, Vermont is top notch. Fresh and locally sourced dishes can be found everywhere from fine dining restaurants to mom and pop shops, and on busy streets to remote farms. But there is one restaurant that has a totally unexpected and unforgettable setting... in the back of a general store. That's right, in the small town of Pittsfield at the back of the Pittsfield Original General Store is The Backroom, a new restaurant that the New York Times calls "New England's Coolest Dinner Party."
Original General Store in Pittsfield is a quintessential Vermont General Store.
Located just four miles from the base of Killington on Route 100, The Original General Store has everything you want, including crafted artisanal products, a 500-bottle wine cellar, Vermont cheeses and charcuteries and everyday sundries and essential items.
Whether you’re looking for farm fresh eggs, organic chocolates, freshly pressed juices, maple syrup or penny candy, you’re sure to find it here.
Cheese made with Heady Topper? Yes, please!
What you may not expect to find here is just outside the back door…
Welcome to The Backdoor, a 20-seat restaurant that has farm-to-table dining in a setting like you’ve never experienced before.
Chef Kevin Lasko and his wife, Katie Stiles opened The Backroom in February, 2015.
The Backroom is an intimate dining room with an open kitchen and offers one dinner seating every Friday and Saturday night throughout the winter months.
Start the evening with a half hour of cocktails and snacks with one-on-one access to the chef.
Katie runs the front of house service and the beverage program, highlighting lesser-known local spirits and boutique wines that further customize the dining experience.
Kevin and Katie host the guests at The Backroom as though they are guests at their home for an intimate dinner party.
Here you’ll enjoy a set three course menu that changes daily, based on local ingredient availability.

Dining at The Backroom offers a level of intimacy that more closely resembles the tiny restaurants that dot the Italian countryside.
The owners open their pantry up to guests, and allow them to explore their work space, ingredients and process as much as they would like.
The restaurant is quickly becoming more than just a destination for a night out, it’s becoming a place for people who love food to share their passion.
In the past, customers have dropped by just to say hi and see what was going on in the kitchen while dropping off samples of homemade sausage, impossible to find craft beer favorites, and freshly hunted venison steaks.
The Backdoor will open for the winter season on Thanksgiving and continue its Friday and Saturday night dinners through June.
From June to Thanksgiving they cater high-end destination weddings by their catering company Vermont Farms Catering.
This is one place that deserves the hype it has been receiving since opening.
The local press loves The Backdoor, and it's also received rave reviews in Departures Magazine and The New York Times.
