One thing you quickly learn about Philly is that we're really a foodie city. Our dining scene is among the best in the world, from tiny taco shops to the fanciest steakhouses. And we really do take our food seriously - if you don't believe me, go ahead and commit any of the following Philly food faux-pas and see how long it takes for a local to correct you.
1. Ordering anything other than whiz or provolone on your steak.
Remember when John Kerry ordered Swiss on his cheesesteak during his campaign in Philly? That's why he didn't win.
2. Trying to order a "sub."
It's a hoagie, not a sub! And please, skip "Subway" and try any of the delicious delis that are on every corner.
3. Calling it "Taylor Ham."
In Philadelphia, it's pork roll. Anyone who tries to order Taylor Ham is going to get a strange look from the waiter.
4. Buying a SuperPretzel or going to Auntie Anne's.
There's nothing like a Philly soft pretzel, so don't let these imitations fool you!
5. Taking too long to order a cheesesteak.
Know what you want when you get to the counter, and order it the Philly way. "whiz wit" is much more efficient than "cheesesteak with cheez whiz and onions."
6. Dining at a chain restaurant.
Philadelphia is full of wonderful mom and pop restaurants that will serve you homemade meals, as well as one-off gourmet restaurants run by entrepreneurial chefs. There's no reason to dine out at a chain restaurant where you'll just get microwaved food.
7. Choosing Entenmann's over Tastykake.
Tastykake is a Philly legend, so don't disrespect our favorite treats by snacking on anything else.
8. Stocking up on store-bought "Italian Ice."
It's easy to find homemade water ice in Philly, so there's no reason to live off of the store bought stuff. It will never be as good as the real deal.
