Some of the best dining surprises are found in the least likely of places, like the swanky, 5-star meals served inside an old, converted Gulf filling station right on N. Main Street in Marshall, North Carolina, where the population has been lingering right around 900 residents since the 1950s.
Although the inside of this old gas station has been cleaned up considerably, it's still a very nostalgic spot for a fine dining experience.
(Note: during COVID, Star Diner's service moved to mainly outdoors, where, in the fall it's a lovely place to enjoy the cool weather and a wonderful meal.)
Inside, there are parts of the eatery that sing visual melodies of the past.
From beadboard walls to painted brick, the surroundings are a wonderful reminder of days gone by and a beautiful contrast to the white linen and fine service of the dining experience at Star.
And then... there's the food!
The menu changes frequently and a current version is always posted on the website.
Starters include items like the colorful caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and a glaze that so perfectly complements the tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil.
Entrees are always changing and based on the freshest items that can be procured.
Items like a spice crusted sea bass, a fresh mountain trout, rigatoni, bison short ribs, and more are typical and always served in a beautiful presentation. You may find yourself wanting to take it home and hang it on the wall it's so beautiful.
The next time you want to have a fine dinner in a wonderfully preserved and repurposed building that'll bring back memories galore...
