On the food and travel site, Thrillist, a doughnut shop in Durham made their list of '33 Best Donut Shops in America.' Maybe you spell it 'doughnut' or 'donut' but we can all agree people do LOVE their doughnuts in North Carolina. I mean, we practically invented Krispy Kreme.

1. Monuts Donuts, Durham
Now a lively, and popular bakery and cafe in the heart of Durham, Monuts got its start as a donut stand operating off a tricycle near famers markets. Congrats on making the top 33 list, Monuts Donuts!

3. Britt's Donuts, Carolina Beach
Since its inception in 1939, people have been driving across the state..and country, for a bite of a hot donut with a cold glass of milk. Started by the Britt's and the Wrights...Britt's has long been a Carolina Beach Boardwalk sensation. In 1974, Britt's and the tightly guarded secret recipe, were sold to long time employee Bobby Nivens. While the 'recipe' remains a secret...some speculate it is the unique mix of ingredients for the glaze that makes them oh so good! Britt's even claims to convert non donut lovers to joyous donut fans.
4. Vortex Doughnuts, Asheville
Being the 'hippest' city in North Carolina, it's no wonder this swanky, modern, locally-sourced doughnut shop is among the best in the state. Vortex uses all-natural, North Carolina ingredients, made from scratch each morning. Not to mention the flavors and unique combinations change to accomodate the seasons, and maybe just your mood. It is nice to know exactly where your morning doughnut comes from. The flavor combinations are so ridiculous they're basically AWESOME.

7. Duck Donuts, Outer Banks
This delicious donut chain along the Outer Banks is SO good, it has now made its reach into Virginia. The owners started Duck Donuts after many visits to the Outer Banks...and the lack of fresh donuts to accompany their morning cup o' joe. Duck Donuts are fresh, and made-to-order. Stop by on your next vacation!

Granny's is shyly located, and a bit hard to find, in the town of Aberdeen. It has been said, by Our State Magazine, "Granny's Old Fashion Donuts feels like someone's back porch." You can't go wrong with these down-home sweet concoctions. Donut aficionados everywhere, rejoice!
