La Fonda on the Plaza is one of New Mexico's oldest hotels, and within it is one of the most haunted bars in the Southwest. This stunning hotel is an amazing place to stay within some of the Southwest's richest history, but you might see more than beautiful architecture at this historic hotel and bar.
This hotel holds a true place in Santa Fe's history, and according to the city's records, La Fonda can be traced all the way back to 1607—it's no wonder it's had a paranormal experience or two. All throughout the 19th century, La Fonda was a popular spot in Santa Fe, and with that came a few popular stories.
A few gruesome events have happened in the hotel. In 1857, a visitor was gambling before a lynch mob came and hung him within the hotel's backyard. Since that fate incident, the backyard has been enclosed and is now home to the famous restaurant, La Plazuela.
A decade later, John P. Slough, Chief Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court, was shot on the premises. Guests of the hotel have since claimed to have seen him wandering around. Another story is that a young bride was allegedly murdered by an ex-lover, and now haunts the wedding suite.
Now, you can pull up a seat at La Fiesta Lounge for a signature cocktail or fine glass of wine, and the ghost of guests past may even sit beside you.
