There is no shortage of delicious fried chicken in Montana, and for that we are thankful. And whether you prefer to get it from an old-fashioned spot like this or a local dive bar, our tastiest fried chicken does seem to come from the most laid-back locations. Bozeman's Roost is no exception, but it's also proof that looks can be deceiving. This little hole-in-the-wall has received national attention.
You'll find Roost on West Main Street in Bozeman, where it has been making locals happy for years.
While Roost is less than a decade old, the business model comes with a long history. Its owners are part of the Darr family, who opened the Chow-Time Restaurant in the 1950s in Tennessee. The family eventually expanded to fried chicken, and the rest is history.
The dining area at Roost is small, although you can sit outdoors in the summer.
Many patrons prefer to take their meal to-go anyway.
This is authentic Southern fried chicken, and it's served with biscuits that are made in-house.
The team at Roost is also committed to whole foods, using natural, hormone-free chicken raised on a family farm. They even order raw peanuts to boil and okra to fry, although they do use local ice cream from the Big Dipper.
Roost really rose to fame when it was featured on the TV show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."
There have since been write-ups in the LA Times and other large publications about this little eatery.
No matter how famous it gets, Roost maintains the same (excellent) quality.
Everything on the menu is a family recipe, and it will really make you love the family.
The chicken & waffles are out of this world, served with irresistible honey pecan butter.
Wash it all down with a big glass of sweet tea.
There's a lot of hype surrounding Roost, but rest assured, this place has earned its excellent reputation.
It's open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Tuesday - Saturday and closes an hour earlier (at 5 p.m.) on Sundays.
Have you ever had fried chicken from Roost? Who do you think serves Montana's best friend chicken?
