Kansas Citians have good taste. We've got the best brews, the best barbecue, and a wide variety of cuisines at our fingertips to try each day. Of course, those restaurants and the food they make are subject to a couple of Kansas City cultural norms. Do you know about the food faux-pas you should never commit?
1. Refusing to try a small "hole-in-the-wall" barbecue joint.
Look, we understand if you're loyal to your main barbecue joint, but trying somewhere else isn't going to ruin your relationship. Missing out on new barbecue just isn't something you do!
2. Or never trying the house sauce with your barbecue.
If a restaurant has a house sauce, try it. You don't have to like it, but one of the main pieces of a good KC barbecue puzzle is the sauce. If you never try it, how will you know if you're missing out?
3. Asking for Provel cheese only on your pizza.
This isn't St. Louis. You will get normal cheeses on your pizza. There are a few spots in town that serve it, though you won't find us there often.
4. Speaking of pizza... ordering pizza from a chain.
There are so many amazing pizza joints, I can't imagine why you'd want to buy from a chain unless there's no other option. Just like barbecue, don't be afraid to branch out!
5. Eating fruits and vegetables from a can when the farmer's market is right here.
I mean, why would you consider canned corn when there's so much just waiting to be bought by the basketful?
6. Ordering "water with hops."
This isn't even beer. Claiming this is beer is a disservice to those at Boulevard and other craft brewers that put actual work into their product.
7. Not knowing the difference between Merlot and Chardonnay.
We have plenty of local wineries, vineyards, and places where you can order and experience amazing wines. Why would you miss out?
8. Avoiding food trucks.
Food trucks are a blessing and often have the best food you'll find during lunch rush.
9. Not caring about your coffee.
Kansas City is big enough that a good portion of its population runs off of coffee on the daily. However, if you have no idea about what brews you like, how can you maximize your daily output?
While you're hungry, don't forget about all the best taco spots in Kansas City you could be having.
