The idea of finding the best restaurant in all of Michigan is truly daunting and really quite impossible. What one considers a greasy spoon dive, another may have fond memories of the place. Some restaurants are world-famous for their culinary techniques, but the service staff may be cold and uninviting. Still other places can be found really nowhere else, making them truly unique experiences.
While we may never have the definitive answer for absolute best restaurant in the state, we reached out to one of Michigan's most celebrated cooks, James Rigato, executive chef at the award-winning The Root in White Lake and owner of the new, but already highly acclaimed, Mabel Gray in Hazel Park. He's known for traveling all over the Mitten and when he does, he makes sure to eat...a lot.
So without further ado, here's one of Rigato's suggestions: Harbor Haus in the village of Copper Harbor in the UP. He guarantees a unique and unforgettable experience.
Michigan's northernmost community, the village of Copper Harbor is the home of Harbor Haus.
Described as a German-Austrian restaurant, it's famous for its use of Lake Superior trout and a number of other seafood dishes.
While the menu has an ample array of surf and turf, the restaurant also prides itself on its creative culinary techniques.
The cuisine pulls from French and Italian traditions.
Sushi-making is another specialty, resulting in a truly global experience.

What makes the place really special, of course, is the pristine location.
Pretty much no matter where you're seated, you're in for the most gorgeous view of Lake Superior.
And who can think of a more romantic setting?
Looks like a magical and mouth-watering place, huh? The spot is naturally closed for the colder months. But we highly recommend the next time you take your trip to the UP, you include this on your bucket list. Or maybe you've already indulged. If so, tell us all about your experience!
