Michigan has really experienced a renewed interest from outsiders wanting to experience the state's revival. But even though population decline has slowed and we're increasingly running into folks who have just moved into town, wouldn't it be even more welcoming if we had some of the same comfort foods popular in other regions of the country? After all, the best way to win over a new friend is through their stomach.
11) Waffle House
Popular in the South, this place specializes in real comfort food... Wouldn't a plate of waffles and fried chicken be great right here in Michigan?
10) Whataburger
Michigan has some of the best burgers around and we're not saying the Mitten is lacking in that department. But can you really have too many burger options? This Texas-based chain makes a pretty tasty option that Michiganders would surely welcome.
9) Swiss Chalet
A Canadian chain, this place does two things great: chicken and ribs. Not that we don't have that here in Michigan already, but this could very well serve as a comfort for our Canadian neighbors.
8) Portillo's Hot Dogs, Chicaago
Ever have a lingering craving for this spot after trips to Chicago? Wouldn't it be great to have Portillo's around here?
7) Jack in the Box
This West Coast-centric chain used to have a Michigan presence, but it's been awhile... Maybe it's time for a refresher on those Sourdough Jacks and tacos.
6) El Pollo Loco
If you've spent any amount of time dining in Mexicantown in Detroit, you've likely experienced flame-broiled chicken like this. So why shouldn't the rest of the state have some?
5) In-N-Out
Duh, I can't think of any region of the U.S. outside of the Southwest that already enjoys the taste of In-N-Out that doesn't wish those amazing Double Doubles would come to their towns.
4) Shake Shack
The insanely popular New York spot has already started its expansion to places like D.C. So why not Michigan?
3) Sizzler
OK, I have to admit, this West Coast steak house chain is just one of those places that I grew up with that every now and then have a craving for. It's nothing fancy, but boy do they do some things right...
...If you've ever had their cheesy bread, you know what I'm talking about.
2) Souplantation
Founded in San Diego, the unlimited soup and salad bar at this place really makes you feel like you're making the right eating decisions for a healthy diet.
Now, if you go back for seconds and then thirds, which we're sure you will, that might not be the case...
... But don't worry, we forgive you.
1) Yoshinoya
Don't get us wrong, Michigan has some AMAZING Asian-style cuisine, from china, India, Bangladesh, Japan and elsewhere.
Yet the beef and teriyaki chicken bowls at this fast food joint founded in Japan and popular in California is notably missing from our landscape.
Undoubtedly, you've come across some of these spots during your travels across the country. Tell us, what popular chains would you welcome to Michigan?
