Massachusetts is one of the oldest states in the nation, so any bar that’s been around since before our statehood is a true antique. The Warren Tavern has been serving thirsty patrons since 1780, a full eight years before Massachusetts was incorporated. What’s more, this place is said to be wicked haunted.
The Warren Tavern was first opened in 1780, making it the oldest tavern in Massachusetts. It was actually the first building to be rebuilt in Charlestown after the entire area was burned to cinders by the British in the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. Paul Revere was known to frequent the bar and even claimed it was one of this favorite places to relax with a pint.
Though the Warren Tavern is known for being one of the Boston area’s most historic and cozy hangouts, this place is hiding a spooky secret – several ghosts are said to haunt the old tavern. In fact, the tavern is actually named for a Dr. Joseph Warren, who was killed on Bunker Hill by the British. Some say that his ghost refuses to leave the tavern named in his honor.
Usually though, the ghost stories center on two different specters. One is a woman dressed in Victorian garb who has been seen lingering in the front room of the tavern. MaryLee Trettenero, a famed Boston psychic, has actually investigated the tavern four times and the front room is where most of the paranormal activity is registered. The other ghost seems to be that of a man in a colonial wig and tights who is sometimes spotted across from the bar near a porthole window. Even the tavern manager has heard the click of old-fashioned heeled boots or shoes on the wood floors.
Even if you don’t visit for the spooks, you’re sure to love the historic atmosphere at Warren Tavern. The bar and dining areas feature low, hand carved wooden ceiling beams that were salvaged from old boats at nearby Charlestown Navy Yard, making them even older than the rest of the building. There’s also a huge fireplace that throws off enough heat to keep you warm and toasty through multiple rounds of libations. You van also indulge in treats like tempting chicken dumplings, broiled scallops, and butternut squash ravioli.
