If you're looking for creative meals that you simply cannot get anywhere else in the United States, Louisiana is definitely the place to visit. We have some of the most creative chefs in the country and the variety of foods they offer show it. Here are some of the strangest, and most delicious, meals you can get in Louisiana.
1. Green Monster Roll, Tsunami, Baton Rouge & Lafayette
Have you ever had sushi topped with Kiwi? This unique roll includes coconut shrimp, snow crab, cream cheese, cucumber, kiwi, avocado, strawberry, coconut flakes and plum sauce. It's kind of like half healthy...half not. Finish it off with some green sake and you are good to go.
2. Fried Rabbit and Red Beans, Hot Tails, 1113 Hospital Road, New Roads
Everyone has enjoyed red beans and rice with sausage. But have you ever given it a try with fried rabbit? This popular New Roads restaurant does it up right, cooked all together in an iron skillet. You'll be coming back again and again.
3. Black Bean – Brown Rice Waffle with Roasted Boneless Half Chicken, La Truffe Sauvage, 815 West Bayou Pines Road, Lake Charles
This Lake Charles restaurant really takes their cuisine to a whole new level, but I think it is this take on Chicken and Waffles, where the waffles are made of black beans (!!) that really takes the cake. Amazing. Now does anyone have a picture of it?
4. Frog Leg Half - n – Half, Chef Roy’s Frog City Café, 1131 Church Point Hwy., Rayne
It's not surprising that the Frog Capital of the world, Rayne, LA, is home to one of the most creative frog leg dishes in the state. You'll love the mix of the fried frog legs and the etouffee.
5. TurDUCKen, Louisiana Crawfish Company, Natchitoches, LA
While there is a good chance you are used to the idea of TurDUCKen by now, it still falls in the category of strange to me. Strange, but truly delicious. Once you order one of these for Thanksgiving you'll never go back!
6. Ya-Ka-Mein, The Ya-Ka-Mein Lady, New Orleans
This unique blend of ramen soup and cajun/soul food elements has been curing hangovers for decades, giving it the nickname Old Sober. Yes it is strange, but it is also incredibly delicious.
7. Alligator Hot Dog with Crawfish Etouffee, Sour Cream, and Creole Mustard, Dat Dog, Multiple Locations
This is perhaps not even the strangest combination possible at this landmark hot dog stand that gives Louisiana residents the opportunity to mix and match a whole bunch of different toppings with some of the best sausages in the state.
8. Pimento Cheese Beignets, Restaurant Cotton, 101 North Grand Street, Monroe
Who knew pimento could be so gourmet? These beignets include Pickled green tomato, smoked paprika and buttermilk dressing.
9. Alligator Cheesecake, Jacque-Imo’s, 8324 Oak St., New Orleans
Jacque-Imo's is home to a lot of creative dishes but it is the cheesecake, which breaks the cardinal rule of no cheese and seafood, that makes the most strange meal strange and (of course,) scrumptious.
10. Wild Boar Flautas, City Pork, Baton Rouge
This amazing Baton Rouge restaurant has a couple of locations that serve up some of the most creative pork dishes in all of Louisiana. But wild boar? Who would have known it could taste so good!
11. Cajun Eggs Benedict, The French Press, 214 E Vermilion St., Lafayette
If you're looking for all of the most delicious aspects of cajun cooking rolled into one, check out this recipe from The French Press: Toasted French Bread, Hebert's Boudin, and Two Poached-Medium Eggs
Topped with our Chicken and Andouille Gumbo and Fresh Scallions.
You are going to fall in love with these dishes, which are some of the most unique and strange in the entire state. Where do you go for unique Louisiana dishes? Let us know your secrets!
