This family owned and operated restaurant is worthy of a pilgrimage, so gas up the car and be prepared to fall in love at first bite.
Lecompte is a small little town in Rapides Parish, just south of Alexandria.
Nestled within this town of fewer than 2,000 people is a local landmark that’s worthy of a pilgrimage, and it earned this charming town the nickname of the "Pie Capital of Louisiana."
Lea’s Lunchroom has been around since 1928, serving people from all over the world.
Lea Johnson opened up the roadside diner in 1928, having no clue that it would one day become such a local landmark. Tired of the long hours of working as a mechanic, Mr. Johnson traded a car for five stools, two countertops, a stove, and a coffee pot. Shortly after, he hired Georgie, whom he would later marry.
At first, the small-town eatery offered just a simple menu of ham sandwiches, a special plate lunch, coffee, and homemade pies.
The menu remains fairly simple to this day. You’ll still find their famous ham sandwich and daily specials on rotation with homemade side dishes.
But no trip to Lea’s is complete without eating one of their delicious homemade pies.
The pies use a family recipe from Georgie’s mother, and the original recipes are still used today.
Eight different types of pies are baked fresh every morning: chocolate, banana, apple, peach, cherry, lemon, and their MVP flavor: pecan.
They also have six seasonal flavors that are rotated into the mix throughout the year.
People have traveled from all over the country to get a taste of these magical pies.
And after just one bite, you'll understand why.
Lea’s Lunchroom is open Tuesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m and is closed on Monday.
You’ll find this tasty hidden gem at 1810 US-71, Lecompte, LA 71346.
