While sweet corn, pork tenderloin sandwiches, and Van Camp’s beans (produced in Indianapolis) all make the list for "Indiana’s Favorite Foods," these dishes can be found almost anywhere in the Midwest. Hoosier Pie, on the other hand, is entirely Indiana's own - it was even recognized as the "Official State Pie" in 2009!

It’s unclear who invented the recipe. Some people credit the Amish in the 1850’s, other people have playfully nicknamed it "Desperation Pie" for its short list of common ingredients — making Hoosier Pie the perfect dessert to whip up for unexpected guests or when other pie fillings just aren't available.

No matter where this sweet treat came from, Indiana's Hoosier Pie (also called Sugar Cream Pie) is one of very few officially recognized state desserts. We’ve put together a handy little list of some of the best places to enjoy a slice!

1. Mrs. Wick's Pies (Winchester)

2. Locally Grown Gardens (Indianapolis)

3. Das Dutchman Essenhaus (Middlebury)

This Amish-style restaurant (complete with a fully Amish and Mennonite kitchen- and wait-staff) was opened in 1971 and is committed to maintaining a traditional menu, complete with a famously delicious Amish bakery. Das Dutchman Essenhaus offers more than 30 flavors of pie, including a unique take on the classic Sugar Cream Pie—Raspberry Cream Pie—which customers can’t stop raving about.

4. Gray Brothers Cafeteria (Mooresville)

Don’t let the word "Cafeteria" scare you away…Gray Brothers serves out-of-this-world comfort food and excellent desserts. Open since 1944, this local legend had gained a lot of attention and lines to get inside can be long, but we promise that their pie alone is worth the wait!

5. The Pie Lady on 5 (Whitley)

We love Pie Lady on 5 for her (literally) home-baked pies; owner and baker Carleen operates as a pre-order roadside pick up stand! For only $10, you can order her old-fashioned Sugar Cream Pie for pick up on weekends. Her innovative business and secret-recipe pies have gained national recognition after she was featured on a PBS Special, "A Few Good Pies," in 2015.

Owner Kelly McClain cuts right to the chase with her business’ name: the Sugar Cream Pie is one of her best sellers! My Sugar Pie has been recognized by local, state, and national news for her homemade pies, including nods from People Magazine, Country Living Magazine, and even Oprah!

7. Blue Gate Restaurant (Shipshewana)

Another Amish-style restaurant that is well known for their delicious homemade pies, Blue Gate Restaurant was featured on Indiana Foodways Alliance’s "Hoosier Pie Trail," which profiled places to find excellent Sugar Cream Pies across the state. 8. Mom’s Homemade Pies (Kokomo)

For Mom’s Homemade Pies, the secret to an excellent pie (of any flavor) lies in the crust…and customers have taken notice! Between their light, flaky pastry and near-perfect filling, the Sugar Cream Pie is a fan favorite in Kokomo. We hope to see their shipping service up-and-running soon!

10. Ahlemeyer Farms Bakery (Columbus)

Ahlemeyer Farms Bakery is well known for their excellent pies—especially their traditional Sugar Cream Pie! Though the business started out selling produce and using the imperfect fruits to bake into pies, no worthy Indiana pie-baker can pass on selling the state favorite Hoosier Pie.

Nordmann’s Nook doesn’t just sell baked goods…they are also a furniture store! The unusual combination gives Nordmann’s Nook some unique charm, but really…it’s all about the pie. We haven’t had the chance to visit Nordmann’s Nook yet, but its exceptional reviews across the board and enthusiastic fans convinced us that this bakery deserves a spot on our list…and also our next stop when we need to satisfy our sweet tooth!
