This Underwater Florida Landmark Is Eerie And Hauntingly Beautiful

The iconic Christ of the Abyss located in the Key Largo Dry Rocks near John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is an underwater landmark that many divers have on their bucket lists. There are many companies in Key Largo offering excursions to see the statue, including glass-bottom boat tours, so you can see the Christ of the Abyss even if you can’t dive or snorkel.

There's just something captivating about the atmospheric light and colors of the ocean and the way marine life has made the statue its home as an artificial reef.

The eight-and-a-half foot bronze statue depicts Jesus Christ offering a blessing of peace to the world. The statue, placed in 1965, is a replica of an Italian one placed in the Mediterranean Sea in 1954.

It would be an impressive piece of art on dry land, but something about its underwater surroundings make it even more beautiful and expressive. Some people might feel a sense of sadness seeing the sunken statue, but for others it's awe-inspiring.
