Residents of Florida are well aware that it’s a complicated place with a unique landscape: socially, politically, and literally speaking. Outsiders, however, usually think of the same handful of things, some of which are more accurate than others, but none of which can really give the whole picture. Here’s what the people we’ve met have mentioned when asked what they know about Florida.
1. Sunshine
We are the Sunshine State, afterall.
2. Oranges
If you've had orange juice, you've probably had Florida Orange Juice.
3. Warm Weather
Sometimes we have to feel bad for the other states, but we earn our perfect winters with long, humid summers.
4. Vacation
It can be strange to make your home in a place everyone else thinks of as a vacation spot.
5. Postcard Sunsets
This sunset in Key West is gorgeous.
6. The Keys
Speaking of Key West, a lot of folks can't think of Florida without thinking of the Keys.
7. Giant Bugs
Everyone here gets used to the palmetto bugs, mosquitoes, banana spiders, and these huge Eastern Lubber grasshoppers, plus many, many more.
8. Roadside Attractions
Florida has a long history as a tourist state. Unfortunately much of the diversity and uniqueness has been diminished over the years as more and more of our vintage attractions close down.
9. Golf
Florida has more golf courses than any other state.
10. Lighthouses
We have many stunning lighthouses, such as the St. Augustine Light, seen here.
11. Lightning
We're the lightning capital of the country, a title we'd be perfectly happy without.
12. Great Fishing
Fishing is very popular in Florida, and with locations like this, you can see why.
13. Manatees
Manatees may seem boring to outsiders, but we adore the gentle creatures.
14. Palm Trees
We love our iconic palm tree so much we made it our state tree.
15. Alligators
When you ask someone what they know about Florida, alligators will usually pop up in the first few responses. This isn't a bad answer. Alligators are surprisingly common here.
16. Hurricanes
Though we've been blessed to have had a nice break from major hurricanes in recent years, no one has forgotten them. In fact, we have an entire season devoted to them every year.
17. Beaches
One of our most recognizable features is our many, many miles of coastline with some of the best beaches in the country.
18. Theme Parks
Of course, everyone thinks of Walt Disney World when they think of Florida. Depending on how well they know the state, they'll know we have many, many more parks as well.
