History Left A Definite Mark At This One Fascinating Spot In Florida
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
You might drive by this tiny bar in Port Orange without a second look, but this little dive is “world famous” for a pretty strange reason. This is where one of America’s most notorious serial killers was arrested.
Aileen Wuornos was a serial killer who murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990 (she claimed in self-defense). Although she didn't have as many victims as some other infamous killers, Wuornos' case was highly publicized because female serial killers are exceedingly rare.
She was convicted for six of the murders and executed by lethal injection in 2002. 10 years earlier, she was arrested on January 9, 1991 while drinking a beer at The Last Resort in Port Orange (near Daytona).
The bar is known as the "home of ice cold beer and killer women," and a framed picture of Aileen sits on the bar where she had her last drink. There is also a mural depicting Aileen's infamous mugshot, along with the names of her victims.
Wuornos had a horrific childhood and difficult adult life, leading some to sympathize with her. Her story was detailed in the movie "Monster" in 2003, which featured scenes shot inside The Last Resort. A signed and framed "Monster" movie poster hangs on the wall.
Curious visitors can also purchase t-shirts with pictures of Wuornos being arrested and a bottle of the bar's "Crazed Killer Hot Sauce," which has her face on the label and claims it is hot enough to "drive you insane."
Down the road, there is also a motel where Wuornos often stayed, then called the Fairview but now known as the Scoot Inn. The motel does not hype the story at all, but it welcomes visitors who want to stay in the same room as a serial killer.
Whether you have a morbid fascination with serial killers or you just like to check out weird roadside attractions, The Last Resort welcomes all curious visitors to have a beer and talk about Aileen.
What do you think? What other strange roadside attractions have you visited in Florida?
