Lisa loves animals and has dogs, rats, cats, guinea pigs, and snakes. Florida is where the rest of the nation goes to vacation. With major theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios, not to mention our beaches and incredible weather, it’s no wonder that everyone wants to explore the Sunshine State. There’s a reason our most-visited attractions are so popular: they’re all great to visit. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of hidden gems in the state. We’ve put together an epic road trip in Florida that will take you to some of the state’s most impressive wonders. These destinations may not be as well-known as other places in the state, but they’re absolutely worth the visit.
The itinerary spans nearly 700 miles, but don’t stress. We’ve found some great places to stay along the way. You’ll be able to sleep in comfort and safely continue along your adventure. Get ready to tour fantastic museums, picturesque gardens, hidden beaches, and more, with stops in between at conveniently-located Best Western properties in Florida that are right along the route. Your first stop on this road trip will be a beach, a fitting place to enjoy the Sunshine State. Santa Rosa Beach is a little more popular than some of the spots you'll be seeing, but as far as beaches in Florida go, it's pretty secluded. It's near Destin and has pristine white sand that will get you in the mood for relaxing.
2. Florida Caverns State Park

Underground caves are not the first thing you think of when you envision Florida, but that's just what you'll find at Florida Caverns State Park. The limestone cave is filled with stalagmites and stalactites. It's a fascinating place!
At this point, we recommend driving for a little bit and then stopping for the night so you can get an early start on your day after a great night of rest. Luckily, there are several great places along your route where you can do just that! Check out the Best Western Plus Madison Inn or the Best Western Plus Lake City.
Your first stop on day two will be the beautiful Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. This 68-acre facility features 24 collections that are visible from a 1.5-mile accessible walking path. There are several pavilions and benches throughout if you'd like to stop to rest.
Your next stop is the amazing Ocala National Forest, an absolute natural wonder. This protected area spans nearly 675 square miles. Much of the land is pine scrub forest, with plenty of springs and natural swimming holes to balance it out. There are a multitude of trails to check out here if you feel up for a hike.
If you feel like you need a rest after exploring these incredible spots, Best Western Ocala Park Centre isn't far from the forest and is a great spot to spend the night.
Next up is a real treat for art lovers. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art doesn't get nearly the love it deserves. You'll find 19,000 square feet of American art here, from pottery to art nouveau paintings.
6. Bok Tower Gardens

Drive a little ways and you'll reach the Bok Tower Gardens. This 250-acre wonderland is atop Iron Mountain, one of the highest peaks in Florida. Not only are there stunning gardens here, but you'll also see a remarkable tower and a bird sanctuary here.
Depending on how long you stayed at each destination on this day, you may want to stop for the night after the gardens. Luckily, the Best Western Port St. Lucie is right along your route.
7. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Whether you opt to continue on on day 3 or choose to spend the night in Port St. Lucie, your next stop will be the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. This large collection of Japanese art contains several gardens and is a beautiful spot for a stroll.
Head on down to Fort Lauderdale next for a truly unique experience. It's not very often that you can find a flea market and drive-in movie theater in one, but Florida is a unique place. The flea market is the largest daily swap shop in the world, and the theater has an impressive 14 screens.
Your final stop is a serene nature experience at the aptly-named Secret Woods Nature Center. This urban wilderness area spans 57 acres and is the perfect place to regroup and relax after your trip.
