The World’s Best Clam Chowder Can Be Found Right Here In Florida
You probably thought the best New England clam chowder could be found in New England. Turns out it’s actually right here in Florida. Don’t believe it? Then head over to this restaurant and try it for yourself.
We know that summer isn't exactly chowder weather, but when it's this good, it's never out of season. Once you taste it, you'll agree.
This culinary achievement wasn't made in one of Florida's big cities where foodies flock to a new restaurant opening every week. This chowder was created in a tiny town on Florida's Nature Coast, with a population of about 800 people, at a restaurant called Tony's.
Eric Jungklaus, the owner of Tony's Seafood Restaurant in Cedar Key, crafted this incredible clam chowder and took it to the Knorr Great Chowder Cook-Off in Rhode Island, winning three years in a row from 2009 through 2011. The only reason he stopped winning? After three wins in a row, contestants have to retire to keep things from getting monotonous.
If you love clams, Cedar Key is the place to visit. This town is famous for its clams, which you can find in delicious dishes in restaurants all over town. Oddly enough, though, they're not used in Tony's clam chowder. It would be too expensive, and basically, their subtle flavor would be wasted on a chowder.
Their famous chowder is perfectly balanced with a bit of a spicy kick, and oh so tasty. Don't worry if you don't like heat, it's not as spicy as our own Minorcan clam chowder from St. Augustine (which is also really good but totally different from the New England variety).
If you fall in love with Tony's chowder, you can bring some home or have it shipped to anywhere in the Continental United States. It can also be found on the shelves of some Publix grocery stores!
In case you're wondering, everything else on the menu, from corn nuggets and crab cakes to corn nuggets and Key lime pie, are also wonderful.
So if you're trying to figure out what part of Florida to explore next, why not take a trip to this delightful little coastal town and try the best clam chowder in the world?
Tony’s Seafood Restaurant is located at 597 2nd Street in Cedar Key.
