Trains are a West Virginia specialty. Thanks to the state’s long, convoluted connection to both the mining and logging industries, old railroad tracks crisscross our mountains and historic railroad artifacts dot our forests. Scenic train rides are among the most popular attractions in the whole Mountain State, selling out almost every season. Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad is a famous one, as is the Potomac Eagle and Autumn Colors Express. But there’s another unadvertised scenic train ride through wild, wonderful West Virginia that almost no one knows about, and, unbelievably enough, it’s free – but of course, donations are very much appreciated. Hop on board the Locust Heights and Western Railroad and bask in all that it has to offer.
Located along US 19 southwest of Clarksburg, Locust Heights & Western Railroad is a privately owned railroad that operates one day per week seasonally, from June to October.
Rides traverse a narrow gauge track of about three-quarters of a mile and last 25 minutes. The train departs each Wednesday in season at 7:00 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. and is operated exclusively by a volunteer crew.
Built in the 1970s by Keith Mason, this railroad is now operated by Mason's wife, grandson, and loyal friends. It's a climax steam locomotive with a coal burning steam engine (come dressed for the possibility that you might get sprinkled with a few cinders).
The Locust Heights & Western Railroad offers an unforgettable train ride through meadows and forests, and, most surprisingly of all, there's no fee to ride this train!
Yes, you read that right - a free train ride through Almost Heaven, West Virginia.
But this family and friends operated locomotive relies on donations of both volunteer hours and cash, so come planning to tuck some well deserved dollars into their donation bin after your ride!
